Biology Module - Transition Year

As a part of Transition Year, all 4th Year students are lucky enough to take part in several different modules throughout the school year.  This enables us to try out all sorts of different things helping us to get a better idea of what we want to pursue later on in life.   Biology is one such module.

Biology is a science subject. It is the science of life and of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution.  Ms. Beirne is one of the Biology teachers and she made the module a thoroughly enjoyable one.  Since each module is between 6-8 weeks we don't have a huge amount of time but we managed to get a lot done in this module.  For the first two weeks we studied DNA and Genetic Engineering in which we learned many highly interesting facts, and watched a very detailed movie on this topic.  For the following three weeks we studied Forensic Science which was definitely the most fun part of this module.  In this we learned how to take finger prints, the use of evidence and many interesting facts about crime scenes.  Getting to take our own finger prints appealed to everyone and was a bit messy to say the least!  For the final two weeks of our module we worked on our group projects.  Our projects could be done individually or in small groups.  The general topic was disease and we covered different diseases with titles ranging from Leprosy to Anorexia to the Fever.
Overall this was a highly enjoyable and worthwhile module in which a lot was learned and appreciated.
