I went to see The Field by John B. Keane in the Olympia Theatre in February. I had been reading it in class and wanted to see it because I found it an interesting play. I also saw the actor Brian Dennehy who plays the Bull McCabe on The Late Late Show and this was another reason I wanted to go to see the play.
The play is about two men who want to own one field. The Bull McCabe had rented the field and looked after it for a long time and felt it was his. The other man, William Dee (Stephen Hogan) wanted to come home from England and wanted this particular field for his wife. The play is about who gets the field in the end and what they are prepared to do to get the field.
I enjoyed the play. I was surprised it was all staged in the local pub, Flanagan’s, but I thought this worked well. My favourite character was Maimie, played by Dearbhle Crotty. She was very funny and played the role really well. I enjoyed the part at the end when she wants the guard to arrest her husband. This is because she has nine children already and is now expecting a tenth! I also thought The Bird O’Donnell played by Brendan Conroy was great. I loved his accent and how he was able to get everyone to buy him a drink. I thought Mr McCabe (the Bull’s brother) and his wife were excellent. They brought a lot of humour to the play as well.
It was a great evening’s entertainment. I would recommend everybody to read this play and go to see it!
