On Friday 22 October 2010, the Student Council took part in a leadership training day under the guidance of John Murphy.  It was organised by Ms. Giblin, the Student Council Liaison Teacher.
Mr. Murphy told us that one of the aims of the Council is to create a good spirit of co-operation, understanding and mutual respect between the students and the school authorities.

He also emphasised the importance of teamwork.  He spoke about delegating, about acknowledging the work of team-mates and about the importance of time-management.  We were split up into groups of 5 and 6 to discuss issues about our school.  We came up with ideas and compromises to the problems that came up.  It was an opportunity for us all to work with the students from different years and we enjoyed it very much.
Then Mr. Murphy told us how to prepare for meetings and what we should do before, during and after our meetings.  The most important part of the preparation is developing a good agenda.  During the meeting it is important to take minutes and keep to the agenda.  Afterwards it is important to write up the minutes.  Mr. Murphy also explained the roles of chairperson, secretary and treasurer.
The training day was a great idea and it has made us even more aware of our responsibilities as a student council.
