Student Council Update - January 2008

The student council has been working on a number of projects and issues since September, including the following:

  • Road Safety was chosen as a key issue for the year and a letter was sent to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council requesting improvements to safety at the entrance to the school. A meeting was held with their Road Safety Officer, Mr. Ken Fitzsimons in January and as a result there was a commitment to do the following:
    • Remark road markings outside school
    • Insert two new ‘school ahead’ signs and two fingerpost signs on the N11
    • A clearup of the footbridge will also be arranged.
    • Many thanks to Mr. Fitzsimons for taking our concerns into account and coming to the school to meet with us.
  • A fundraiser was organised on the 18th January to raise funds for Fr. Gerry Roche’s work in Kenya. A total of €1,180 was collected and many thanks to all who contributed to this worthy cause. Following students’ suggestions, the Student Council and the Charities Committee will hold a ‘Pink Day’ in aid of Breast Cancer after midterm.
  • The Council will meet with the Parents Association in February to give a presentation on our work.
  • 1st Years were elected onto the Council for the first time in September and are making an excellent contribution to the Council’s work.
  • Members attended a training day with Deirdre Phelan from the Second Level Support Service in October, which provided invaluable insights into how Student Councils operate. As a result of this day, we decided on preparing a year plan and on revamping our notice board.
  • Five representatives attended the Loreto Network Student Council meeting in the Gresham Hotel in November. We were one of two schools who made presentations about our Council. Well done to Gaelan Britton (4th Year representative) and Anne O’Connor (5th Year representative) who made the presentation. The representatives really enjoyed the day and thanks to Mr. Michael Denny and Sr. Estelle for organising the day.
  • We worked on the school’s mission statement with Ms. Daly and on the Anti-Bullying Policy. We were given the responsibility of coming up with the code for this policy and will also be involved in organising Friendship Week later on in the year.
  • Many thanks to Mr.Cluskey for repairing taps and locks on bathroom doors.

The above are some of the projects the council are working on, on behalf of the students and we would like to remind you of our suggestion box near our notice board if you have any further suggestions for the council to work on.
