Girls Under Pressure
Title: Girls Under Pressure
Author: Jacqueline Wilson
Publisher: Corgi
Number of pages: 205 pages
Target Audience: 12 - 15 Years Girls
Reviewer: Aoife O'Flynn
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
This story is about an average thirteen year old girl. After one nasty comment about her weight the girl stops eating and goes on an extreme diet. The girl starts becoming bulimic
and her family and friend start to get very worried and concerned. The girl doesn’t listen and her thoughts get bottled up inside her head. Will the girl finally she what is actually happening or will everything get even more extreme?
My response:
I really enjoyed the book because I felt that I could really relate to the character Ellie, the main character in this book. Almost every teenager thinks and feels very self conscious about their weight and I think this book gets to the point about average teenage girls and shows you what to do and not to do when concerned about your weight.
Favourite character:
My favourite character was Ellie because I felt that I related to her the most and I knew about her and her personality. At the start of the book, all Ellie can think about is her weight but at the end of the book she starts to mature and sees that your weight doesn’t mean anything.
Writer’s style:
The book has quite a lot of dialogue but there are also a few long descriptive passages. The chapters are not too long. There are a few bits of slang in it and the story would be more for teenagers than kids.
The writer:
Jacqueline Wilson was born in Somerset. She began her working life at a publishing company, then spent two years writing as a magazine journalist, before turning her hand very sucessfully to a career as a full time author. She has won a lot of awards including the Smarties Book Prize and the Children’s Book Award for ‘Double Act’. Jacqueline now lives in Surrey and has one daughter.
Other books by the writer:
- Girls in Love
- Girls out Late
- Girls in Tears
- The Bed and Breakfast Star
- Lola Rose
- Midnight
- The Diamond Girls
