This week the Justice and Peace Committee will be visiting all tutor classes to raise awareness of just some of the injustices and inequalities in our modern world. Our Senior Reporter Rebecca Geary is a committee member and has provided more details.
Justice and Peace Committee
Every year in Loreto College Foxrock, 5th Year students are given the wonderful opportunity to get more involved in the school by joining Leadership Committees. There is a great variety of committees available ranging from charities to literacy and prefects are also chosen for many of Leaving Cert subjects. This year I decided that I wanted to give back not only to the school, but to others in the world that are in desperate need of our help. With this motivation in mind, I joined the Justice and Peace Committee run by Ms. McElroy. This group’s purpose is to raise awareness among students and staff about inequalities and injustice in the world today.
For our first meeting, Ms. McElroy told us about social inequalities in the world. We learned about how the world population is divided up into each continent and how food is distributed between these regions. We were shocked to learn that although Asia has the largest population, it receives only a fraction of the food that North America receives. North America is the largest consumer in the world with the lowest population, Europe is not far behind. After learning this, we were very eager to spread the word to students about this injustice happening in the world today.
For the next two weeks the Justice and Peace Committee will be visiting each class at Tutor time to give a presentation on this new-found knowledge. The aim is to shock students as this will get people talking about what we can do to fix this ever growing problem. The goal of the committee is to raise awareness about any important issue that we feel needs to be addressed. Students need to be informed about how unjust and unfair the world really is and we plan to give them this information. It is very important to remember that any one person can make a difference. Knowledge is power.
