The Green Schools committee is looking forward to our busy year ahead. This year we are concentrating on getting our second green flag, for energy. We have already started our campaign in the school by reintroducing W.O.W. – ‘Walk on Wednesday’. We are encouraging students to walk to school on Wednesday whenever possible from home or to walk a little further than normal.
We have and will continue taking surveys as to what is the total amount of cars entering through the school gates and by how much this amount will reduce during this campaign. Some of the members of the Green School Committee attended the eco-conference held in the Dun Laoghaire - Rathdown County Council Hall in October. Everyone had a great day meeting with other schools and all were inspired by the speakers to do their part for the environment. We also got ideas of things to do in our own schools to promote environmental awareness.
Members of the committee went around to the tutor classes to make sure every student is aware about where the recycling bins are located. We have had lots of trouble this year with general waste contamination of the bins but feel we have been successful in rectifying this problem. We have organized a recycling box decorating competition for all the tutor classes to get involved in. The closing date for this competition is 25th November 2011 and there will be fantastic prizes for the winning classes.
